Roman is still healing from his foot injury from out at the ranch. It was a deep cut and will take a long time to heal. But it is healing, nicely. Roman has to stay in a dry stall because of the location of his cut and the risk of infection and reinjury. We have had a lot of icy storms that have made everything muddy around here when it all melted.
Roman is not happy about having to be couped up inside every day. I don't blame him. We had warm weather today, about 60 degrees, so I brought Roman outside. I tied him to the fence on the pavement and gave him some have. His old friend, Joe, came over to visit. They haven't talked in over a month. So, that was a nice outing for Roman. It really helps if he can come out of his stall for a little while, even if he doesn't get to run around, he still enjoys the change of atmosphere.
It is supposed to get very, very cold this weekend. We may get another ice, storm, too. It is only supposed to be around 23 degrees for the high temperature and 10 to low teens at night. Bur-r-r-r!
I have been bringing our other stallion, Apollo, into the barn with Roman on cold nights. They do quite well together in the barn, keep each other company. The stalls are only panels until we can remodel. The "boys" don't try to get to each other over the panels. One stall separates them. They are quiet when together in the barn. I let Apollo and Roman sniff noses the other day when I was leading Apollo back out to his outdoor pen. They sniffed a couple times, then Apollo squealed at Roman. I quickly pulled Apollo away before a fight could break out. I lead Apollo to his pen. When I came back to check on Roman, he just looked at me sadly as if to say, "Mom! He just yelled at me!" That little black stud just chewed out a 17+ hand stud and told him he was boss! Poor Roman, he wasn't expecting that. Anyway, they will be together again this weekend when it gets cold. Hope they are still friends. |

November 6, 2006 Well, Roman's adventure has ended quickly. Roman's adventure on the ranch was short lived. He felt frisky on cold day and kicked up his heels while in his pen. When he kicked up, he hit a metal connector on the rail of his pen and cut his foot badly enough to need veterinary attention. We thought maybe he might have injured it worse than he did, but x-rays came back clean. He just has to wait for the deep cut to heal back together. Needless to say, he's done at the ranch for a while.
I visited Roman at the vet's today. He is bored. I took his blanket off and brushed him all over. I combed out his tail and braided it. And I brought him little bit of one of his favorite treats. He wasn't very hungry, just bored. He yawned a lot and played with his blanket that I had placed over his stall door. He appreciated the company, but I wasn't very entertaining for very long. I had to return home after about an hour. He was fine, just bored. |

Well, Roman has gone off to the ranch for a month to learn how to be a ranch horse. I hope he's not afraid of cattle He will get over it quickly if he is. He will be working those cattle soon.
The guys out at the ranch just couldn't believe how tall Roman is. They were truly amazed at his height and that he is a Quarter Horse. It was quite funny to see the disbelief on their faces. |

On Sunday, the 19th I took Mama King to go ride with my sister-in-law and friends. There were 5 of us girls and we rode each others horses. We rode for a long time. It was a lot of fun.
Mama King went to the vet on Wednesday to get her coggins test updated. She didn't want to be caught out of the pasture. She has to come to me because there are snakes in the tall grass. I'm not walking out in it! She finally came up to the catch pen to with the other mares and I caught her there.
The vet said Mama K. was in good shape, easy keeper. He said she seemed like she had a real nice temperment. I confirmed that she does. I am hoping to ride her in a trail ride soon. |

October 15, 2006 Great news! Roman competed in an AQHA show today in open 3-year-old halter stallions. He placed first under two judges and was also Reserve Grand Champion Halter Stallion. Yeah Roman! But the nicest part of the show was everyone who came by to visit Roman at his stall. He loves visitors. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. We hope to see you again sometime.

November 5, 2006 Coco is still up at the barn trying to recover from an abscess in her hind foot. Her other leg is stressing from taking weight off the bad foot. She is stalled on rubber mats and I have soaked her hoof several times in a hot Epsom salt bath. Her foot doesn't seem to be getting any better, though. The farrier trimmed her 2 weeks ago and that opened one abscess. Looking at the bottom of her hoof it looks like she had two abscesses near the sole. I soaked her hoof again last night, wrapped it in cotton and bandages and put a Davis boot on her. Today I put her out in the front yard in a temporary pen and kept moving it around so she was always on fresh dry ground and was able to graze all day. She was standing a bit better, I think. I'll do the same thing tomorrow, I guess. If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. My vet is out of the office until Nov. 13 and I have already had her there once. She walks on it but with lameness. She has a healthy appetite and nickers to you when you enter the barn. So, she is in great spirits. That helps a lot. |

October 29 I have been riding Mama King quite a bit this last week. We have worked up to riding around the block. We trotted one day and today we even loped. She had three different riders on her today, two inexperienced riders and me. She was a doll. The other day, my son was on her and some of the neighbors sped by on noisy four-wheelers. Again, she was just a doll, did not let it bother her in the least bit. There is one thing that really made her wary on our first ride around the block...PIGS! There were some hogs in a small field near where we were riding. Mama King did not know what to think of them. She was quite curious and on guard. She only saw them from a short distance. But she was not sure about them. I got her mind refocused and we continued on our ride. We went up and down bar ditches several times, rode past a great dane and my stallion Apollo. I was very proud of Mama King’s good behavior. She even had 2 other people ride her today. Good girl.

October 20, 2006 Coco (Lady To Tru) lost quite a bit of weight right before weaning her foal. She was wormed right after weaning and before going out to pasture, but she just hasn't put the weight back on. So, she went to the vet today and had her teeth floated. She did not think that was very fun. Coco is staying up at the barn for a little while until she puts some weight back on. She is getting nutrient packed diet to help boost her weight gain. She is enjoying it, too! |

October 16, 2006 Half the horses received farrier work today. Roman got new shoes. One of his old ones got sucked off in the mud when we had a lot of rain not too long ago. The rest of the grand will get their turn with the farrier next week. |

October 19, 2006 I tried something new today. I caught Mama King in the pasture, put a halter on and snap-on reins. Then I got on her bareback and asked her to ride out in the pasture. I didn't know if she would go bareback since she didn't go very well with a saddle when I first got her. Well, after a little hesitation, she went right out in pasture, down the trail on a loose rein. She was a good little riding mare. I guess she just hasn't been ridden in a long time and that was why she didn't go well the first time I tried to ride her. What a pleasant surprise. |
